​김을은 금속공예를 전공, 주얼리 디자인을 하다가 뒤늦게 회화로 전향한 작가이다. 전향 후 초기에 자화상 연작과 가족사를 다룬 혈류도 연작 등의 매우 진중한 주제의 회화작업을 해오던 그가 2000년경부터 새로운 선택을 하는데, 바로 드로잉이다. 그는 그가 해오던 회화작업에 모종의 회의를 느끼면서 좀 더 자유롭고 넓은 예술세계에 대한 오랜 동경으로 드로잉을 맞이하게 된 것이다. 그는 6년간 2차(1차 드로잉 프로젝트: 2001 ~ 2003, 2차 드로잉 프로젝트: 2004 ~ 2006)에 걸친 드로잉 프로젝트를 진행하고 드로잉에 몰두하면서 새로운 예술세계를 구축하게 된다. 드로잉은 작가 자신의 생각이 가장 자연스럽게 드러나는 개인적인 매체로, 수년간 드로잉 작업에 몰두한 결과 그의 드로잉은 계속 진화하면서 회화, 오브제, 사진 등의 다양한 장르의 작업들도 드로잉 안으로 끌어들이게 된다. 보다 열린 개념으로 드로잉을 지속적으로 확장시켜온 그는 최근에 그의 전체 작업을 “My Great Drawings”라는 진전된 개념으로 부르고 있다. 특히, 최근에는 그의 독특한 무주제의 잡화(雜畵)적 회화뿐만 아니라 그가 수집한 다양한 오브제들을 이용한 입체작업에 몰두해있다. 이와 같이 열린 정신으로 경계를 자유롭게 넘나드는 그의 작업태도는 바로 드로잉의 정신과 맞닿아 있는 것이다. 재료· 기법· 주제 등에 구애받지 않는 그의 드로잉은 그의 몸이 세상과 만나는 경계선에서 직설 혹은 유머로 드러나고 있다. 

이번 전시에서 선보이게 되는 작품들 중 장난감, 이전 작품의 미니어쳐, 사자성어(牛·雞·狗·畵) 등의 오브제들을 한데 모아 박스 안에 배열한 작품의 경우, 예술에 대한 작가의 태도를 집약하여 보여준다고 할 수 있을 것이다. 전시의 제목 <牛·雞·狗·畵>에서도 알 수 있듯이, 그가 예술(혹은 그림)에 대해서 얼마나 자유로운 생각을 가지고 있는 지를 보여줌과 동시에 무서울 정도로 진지함을 동시에 가지고 있음을 보여주고 있다.

Kim eull as a metal craft major and jewelry designer turned into an artist of paintings somewhat belatedly. His initial works touched upon fairly serious themes after he changed his career: series of self-portraits and the blood maps dealing with a family history. And yet, he opted for a new path in around 2000, that is, drawings. He ushered in drawing with long yearning for a freer and broader art world, feeling a sense of doubts about his existing painting work. He established a new art world by conducting drawing two projects for six years (the first project was from 2001 to 2003 and the second one was from 2004 to 2006), thus concentrating on drawings. Drawing is a personal medium that most naturally exposes an artist’s own thoughts.

As a result of concentrating on drawings for many years, his drawings have continued to evolve, bringing in other genres of work into drawing including painting, object and photography. Having continuously expanded drawing in a more open-minded concept, he has recently called his overall work “My Great Drawings” in a more advanced concept. He has recently concentrated on not only unique miscellaneous paintings of ‘no theme’ but also three-dimensional work using various objects he collected. As such, his work attitudes that freely transcend the boundaries with open-mindedness touch the realm of the mentality of drawing. His drawing that knows no boundary of materials, techniques and themes reveals itself as straight talk or humor on a boundary where his body encounters the world.

His works presented at this exhibition including toys, miniatures of his previous works and objects of <cow, chicken, dog and painting> put and arranged in a box seemingly show his attitude towards art. As the exhibition title <cow, chicken, dog and painting> showcases, it hints at his liberal thoughts on art (or painting) along with his sheer seriousness towards it.​
