‘각(角)’으로부터의 사유(思惟)

2011년 2월 전시를 위한 첫 미팅을 가졌다. 공교롭게도 소소에서 전시를 가졌던 작가들로, 그들 중 공간성을 드러내거나 평면 안에 공간의 움직임을 드러내는 박기원, 박미현, 서혜영, 정승운 등 4명의 작가들로 전시를 구성하게되었다. 여러 번의 미팅을 통해 끌어낸 주제는 ‘내각’(內角)이다. ‘내각’의 의미를 사전적인 접근이 아닌 시각적 사유의 대상으로써 추상적으로 다가간다. 그래서 작가들마다 내재된 ‘각’(모서리, 구석)을 모티브로 하여 갤러리 소소의 공간과 성질을 대입시켜 기하학적으로 풀어내는 작업을 보여준다.

작가들이 각자의 영역(프레임) 안에서 풀어내는 조형적 기호는 다다르다.

박기원 작가는 아무것도 없음을 의미하면서 무한 가능성을 내포하고 있는 X(엑스)를 유리창에 비닐테이프를 사용하여 기존의 형식적인 이미지를 벗어나 근원적 제로상태로 환원되는 장소를 제시하며 박미현 작가는 기존에 사용하였던 연필, 펜과 같은 '마른' 재료에서 벗어나 기름을 먹인 한지에 붉은 유화물감을 사용하여 플라톤의 입체들(정 4면체, 정 6면체, 정 8면체, 정 12면체, 정 20면체)을 겹쳐 기하학적인 형상을 드로잉하였다.

서혜영 작가는 몇 년 전 여행을 다녀 온 직후 남겼던 드로잉을 모티브로 시간과 장소에서 격리된 추상적인 공간에 대한 이야기를 갤러리 곳곳에 풀어놓았고 정승운 작가는 실 위에 유화 물감을 사용한 공제선 작업을 통하여 풍경을 끌어들임으로써 공간을 체험하도록 한다.

Reasoning from ‘angles' 

​

The first meeting for the 2011 February exhibition was held. Coincidently, the artists were those that held their exhibition in gallery SoSo: Park Ki Won, Park Mi Hyun, Suh Hai Young and Chung Seung Un that revealed the characteristics of space and the spatial movement on a two-dimensional plane. The theme finalized through numerous occasions of meetings was ‘Internal Angle. The meaning of the interior angle is approached in an abstract aspect as a target of visual reasoning instead of the literal approach. So, each of the artists show their works where the space and features of gallery SoSo are geometrically unraveled under the motif of the embedded ‘angle (corner, edge).’ Sculptural signs that are unraveled within the frame of the each artist are different. 

Park Ki Won suggests a space that is returned to the fundamental zero state beyond the existing formative image by using a vinyl or plastic tape for an alphabet ‘X’ that means the absence of anything and implies infinite possibilities on a glass window.

Park Mi Hyun stays away from the ‘dry’ materials used in her existing works such as pencil and pen and resorts to reddish oil paints on the hanji (the Korean traditional paper) coated with oil. She did the drawing of geometrical images by overlapping Platonic three-dimensional forms (regular polyhedron, cube, octahedron, dodecahedron and icosahedron). 

Suh Hai Young unraveled her stories in different areas of the gallery on the abstract space detached from time and space under the motif of her drawings she did immediately after her trip several years ago. Chung Seung Un enables one to experience a space by bringing in a landscape through the sky line work using oil paints on threads.
