미술과 음악, 양쪽의 절대감각을 타고나 베이스 기타리스트(잼Jam 연주가)와 미술작가로 활동하고 있는 임국의 7번째 개인전이 헤이리의 갤러리 소소에서 열린다. 드로잉, 회화, 입체의 장르를 넘나들며 특유의 유머와 재치를 발산해왔던 임국의 7회 개인전의 제목은 ‘국지전(國地展)’이다. ‘국지전’의 의미는 이번 작품들의 시작점이 작년 헤이리의 작업실에서 그 주변의 일상풍경을 담았다는 장소적, 지역적 의미에서 기인한다.

“처음부터 끝까지 어떤 결과에 대한 생각을 하지 않는다. 그러나 작업 중 반짝하는 아이디어가 작업의 집중도를 높이고 재미를 준다.”라는 그의 말처럼그는 그림을 미리 계획하지 않고, 찰나의 영감-사람들이 흔히 놓치기 쉬운 일상적인 것들-을 표현해 낸다. 표현 한 것들 중 다시 다른 생각으로 바뀌면 덧그리기도 한다. 그렇게 그려진 그림에는 새, 강아지, 말, 코끼리, 비행기, 사람 등 작가가 좋아하는 소재들이 등장한다. 이는 기본적으로 개념적인 것이 아닌 쉽게 다가갈 수 있는 흥미롭고 친근감이 드는 형태들이다.

이번 전시에서 임국작가의 중요한 변화는 재료이다. 순간의 영감을 그리기 위해 그 동안 즐겨 썼던 아크릴에서 그와는 반대성질인 유화물감으로 바뀌었는데, 그 이유는 건조시간이 긴 유화 물감은 순간의 영감을 오히려 역으로 느리고 여유 있는 성질의 재료를 선택하여 일루전의 깊이를 주고 또한 이는 계속 변화시키고 싶은 욕망을 표현하는데 좋은 수단이 되기 때문이다.

임국의 작업은 완고한 형태나 논리 및 형식주의에 치중하지 않는다. 이번 작품들은 재료가 바뀌면서 순간 변화하는 생각들이 겹쳐 행위의 과정들이 한 화면에 집약되는 특성을 보여준다. 동시에 그의 원시적이며 열려있는 감각들은 잃지 않으며, 그의 또 하나의 장기인 잼(Jam, 즉흥연주)처럼 음률적인 리듬을 타고 있음을 보여준다.

Im, Gook’s solo exhibition is held in gallery SoSo, Heyri. He was born with absolute sense of both painting and music, as a bass guitarist; jam player, and painter. So far, people could feel humor from his art works which are drawing, painting and sculpture. Im, Gook’s title of 7th exhibition is Gook Ji Jeon, it means Gook has an exhibition in Heyri area. The hidden meaning of the title is that his new work was started at Heyri as he worked in Heyri during last summer.

“I’ve never thought about my work’s very last result at all. I got interests of working because of ideas from when the moments of working. And the ideas make me focus on my work.” As he said he doesn’t plan his work but expresses inspirations of the moment which people let go so easily. He often works as re-painting on his works reflecting his momentary ideas. In the painting which he completed through several steps of his own, there are bird, dog, horse, elephant, air plane and human which are objects what he loves. Basically these kinds of objects are more familiar things than conceptual issue for audiences.

At this exhibition, his noticeable change is a material. He used to work with acryl color which he could paint fast so as to express his inspiration of the moment because acryl color gets dry fast but since last year he has changed to oil color. The reason of this change is that oil color could have an illusion as he paints his inspiration of the moment as using the material; Oil color, which is so slow and calm, inversely. Also this material is a good way to express his desire which keeps change with every single second.

Im, Gook’s works do not put emphasis on logic or formalism. The works from this exhibition let people see and feel traces of working. It means that there are actions of paintings and layers in one painting which was made through his steps; paint, re-paint and re-paint till the last painting is almost covered.. Also, he shows that he doesn’t miss his sense which is so primitive and opened but he gets into the rhythm as he plays impromptu which is the special skill of him.
