임국 작가의 8번째 개인전으로 2008년 4월에 이어 갤러리 소소에서 열리는 2번째 개인전이다. 임국 작가는 작업과 생활을 밀접하게 연관시켜 일상 생활 속의 다양한 소재와 재료를 선택하고 그 위에 즉흥적인 유머 감각을 덧입혀 작품을 표현해 왔으며, 동시에 베이스 기타리스트(잼 Jam 연주가)로서도 활동해 왔다. 

임국 작가는 갤러리 소소에서 열린 2008년 4월 전시에서 아크릴 물감을 재료로 한 작업과 유화 물감을 재료로 한 작업을 함께 선보였다. 이를 시작으로 하여, 아크릴 물감과는 다른 유화 물감의 물질적 특성에 주목하게 되면서 이를 발전시켜 이번 전시에는 전 작품이 유화 물감으로 작업되었다. 유화 물감의 점성, 색, 질감 등을 표현해 내기 위하여 물감 흘리기, 뿌리기, 물감 긁어내기, 두터운 물감의 층 만들기, 덧칠하기, 대담하고 거친 느낌의 붓질 등의 여러 기법을 이용하였다.

진하면서도 깊이가 있는 색감의 표현이 가능하다는 점과 물감이 마른 후에도 추가적인 작업을 할 수 있다는 점 등을 임국 작가는 유화 물감의 강점으로 꼽았으며, 그 과정에서 작업의 방식에도 많은 변화가 생겼다라고 이야기하기도 하였다.

매체와 작업 방식의 변화는 작가의 작품 내에서의 소재의 표현 방법에도 영향을 주었다. 그 결과 이전에는 서술적이고 묘사적으로 소재를 표현하였으나 지금은 추상적이고 직관적으로 소재를 표현하고 나아가 비구상적인 형태까지도 작품 내에 포용하게 되는데, 작가의 표현을 그대로 빌리자면,‘추상복합’이라고 이 특징을 말할 수 있다.

또한, 작업실과 생활공간의 분리로 작업의 집중도가 높아지고 유화 물감의 사용 등의 새로운 표현 방법을 시도하면서 작품의 크기가 커지는 계기가 되었다. 이전 전시에서는 2호 - 20호 크기의 작품이 주였다면, 이번 전시에는 4호 - 80호에 이르는 다양한 크기의 작품을 선보인다.

Im, Gook's solo exhibition

This is Im, Gook’s second exhibition at the gallery SoSo, following last one, in April, 2008 and also it is his 8th solo exhibition. His art works and daily life are deeply connected, so he can find a variety of materials and subjects for his paintings easily in his daily life. And he added his own sense of humor on his paintings. In addition, he had an inborn talent in music he has been a bass-guitarist. 

He used to paint in acrylics mostly, sometimes uses oils for the point. But he discovered different properties of the material between oils and acrylics, and focus on oil paintings. And this exhibition is made up of only oil paintings. Several techniques were used such as shedding, scattering, scraping, painting over and etc. These are for the expression of viscosity, color and texture in oils.

He said that he could express the colors deep and do additional works after being dried by using oils, and these two oils’ advantages made him work differently. 

Previously he described subjects in the depictive way containing narrative, but he has been changing to paint abstractly and intuitively by the change of representation of the materials. 

To borrow an expression of the artist, “It can be an abstract complex.” In addition, he separated a life space and a work place. That could make him to concentrate on painting bigger and renewal.
